Lionel Messi admits he could retire from international football after the World Cup
Messi, 30, went into a brief international retirement in 2016 following disappointment at the Copa America.
But he now admits he would consider calling it a day on international football if things don’t go well in Russia.
Messi told Spanish newspaper Sport: "I don't know. It will depend how we do, how it ends.
"The fact we've lost three finals now has led to some complicated moments with the Argentine press due to the differences in seeing what it means to reach a final.
"It is not easy and [reaching three finals] has to be appreciated. It's true that winning them is important, but getting there is not easy."
The Barcelona star has won five Ballon d’Ors along with four Champions League titles, nine La Ligas, seven Spanish Super Cups, and three Club World Cups.
But he’s found international honours a lot harder to chalk up.
He won an Olympic gold medal and the Under-20 World Cup in 2005, but never the main prize.
But Messi is not thinking about coaching when his career comes to an end just yet.
“I have not thought about it,” he added. “I do not want each one lives it in a way.
“I try to go year after year, with tranquility. When your day comes, I'll see. I will find the path to follow, I will grab it and see how everything goes.
“Today I do not see myself as a coach. You never know what will happen.
“He had heard Zidane say that he was never going to be a coach and then he ended up biting and he was there.
“I do not see myself there but I do not know what will happen.”
