LIONEL MESSI wants Barcelona to sign Chelsea star Marcos Alonso this summer, it’s claimed in Spain.

The left-back has impressed following his move to Stamford Bridge in 2016 from Fiorentina.

Alonso helped to guide Chelsea to the Premier League title last season in Antonio Conte’s first season in charge.

The 27-year-old continued his fine form this season, despite a below-par year for the Blues under Conte.

Chelsea had a horror Premier League title defence, with the Blues finishing fifth to miss out on Champions League football for next season.

And according to Spanish news outlet Don Balon, Alonso has caught the eye of Barcelona.

They say Nou Camp superstar Messi has told club transfer chiefs to sign the Spain international this summer.

Messi feels Alonso would be the perfect signing to bolster Barca’s defensive ranks.

Barca’s only real option at left-back is Jordi Alba, with Lucas Digne struggling to impress at the Nou Camp following his move from PSG.

Alonso has been vocal about his transfer plans this summer, with the defender revealing he’s fully focused on Chelsea.

He said: “I have not considered that possibility [of leaving Chelsea]. I just try to give my best to my team.”

On Chelsea’s poor season under Conte, which could see the Italian leave Stamford Bridge this summer, Alonso added: “In England, after winning the Premier League, it is normal for you to have a difficult year, especially with the level that Manchester City is maintaining throughout the season.”
