Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has signed a new contract with Barcelona with a release clause worth of 700million euros.

The five time Ballon d’Or winner, 30, now is tied to the Catalan club until the end of 2020/21 season.

Messi has won eight Spanish league titles with the club and four Champions Leagues.

His previous deal was due to expire next year, having scored for the club 523 goals in 602 appearances.

On Friday night he won his fourth European Golden Shoe – an award which is given to the player who scored most goals – after netting 37 goals in La Liga last term.

The club had announced in July that the Argentina international has reached agreement for a new deal, but the signing was delayed until now.

In a statement, the club said Messi “still has a lot more to give, which is music to the ears of all Barca fans who will get to continue marvelling at his greatness”.

Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu said, “We are in luck with the Barça players. We continue to enjoy the best player in the history of football.”
