Man United legend discusses the day he was embarrassed by Leo Messi

One Manchester United legend has been discussing the day he came up against Barcelona star Lionel Messi and it ended in embarrassment.

That player is defender Rio Ferdinand who is a legend in his own right but it was a different story when he came up against Messi.

Rio recalled that 2009 Champions League final between Barcelona and the Red Devils and even revealed that the evening was ‘the most embarrassing of his life.’

Not only that, he revealed that the Champions League final at Wembley a couple of years later brought the same result.

“As a defender, you want to be close to (the opponent) or, at least, to have the ball,” he explained.

We did not have the ball, and when Messi got close to me, he just went under my arm!”

“Normally you put your hand out and hit someone in the chest but he was just going underneath it.”

“Me and Vidic just looked at each other on the half-way line at Wembley [in disbelief].” 

“I just thought, this guy, he’s a magician. He’s the best player I’ve played against.”

“He was just devastating and we felt if we had played Barcelona without Messi, we probably would have won.”
Safe to say, Rio will have had quite a few bad nights sleep thinking about those two occasions!

La Liga president makes big Messi claim

While Messi has been getting big plaudits from Rio Ferdinand, he got some from elsewhere recently.

In fact, it came from La Liga president Javier Tebas who made a big claim about Messi’s future.

Not only that, he also discussed Cristiano Ronaldo and made some further claims about his future.

If his instinct is to be true then we could be seeing some big developments in the near future.
